Leg Warmers: First Time Around

Leg Warmers: First Time Around

I purchased an extra large sweater recently to try to sew a pair of leg warmer socks with the sleeves. When it comes to sewing clothes, it's typically a disaster. And that is usually because I do not know how to properly mark size and such.

Anyhoo, I tried to measure to circumference of my foot and sewed the seams a little beyond what I measured. That actually worked out pretty well.

I wanted to cut out a hole where the heel would be sitting and sew a heart shaped patch on. I used some misc. red fabric I had leftover from a previous sewing project.

From past experiences, I know to cut out the heart larger than I want the patch to be. I do this because after I sew the patch on, the heart should be smaller from the area I will use to sew seams.

With the patch, I lightly marked the sleeve where I wanted to sew the patch on. Then, I cut a rough heart shape out within the markings

Next, I matched up the heart patch with the rough heart gap in the sleeve and sewed the two together. The laziness hurt me here. Since I didn't take the time to cut out the hole correctly, the patch didn't quite match up with the gap. And somehow, it morphed into a triangle.

Taking that as a learning experience, I continued on. I sliced off portions from both sides of the sleeve so it would fit more like a sock. As I sewed the sides, I pinned in some cream coloured lace to run up the back of the leg warmer.

I finished off the top of the leg warmer by folding it in and sewing some black lace around the top.

And ta-da! We have a first try at sewing a leg warmer/sock. I could see several flaws in this attempt and points that needed fixing.

I made an error in the placement of the heart patch (as well as it not turning out to be a heart). But I was able to counter that by folding the bottom up. Also the lace was not stretchy at all! (Didn't quite expect that). I could not pull the sock past my calf.

I still have another sleeve, so I'll use it to try again. I will sew the heart patch directly on the sleeve. I will also place the patch lower on the sleeve. Before I sew up the sides, I will sew the black lace and top inward to avoid it being to tight. I would also like to look into sewing buttons or ribbon into a leg warmer.

I will purchase another sweater to do a "finished" pair of leg warmers when I am done experimenting and feel comfortable enough to do so.

Thank you for reading. I would really appreciate feedback on what you think, ideas, or even suggestions on sewing (I'll need all the help I can get). I am in the process of working on a Facebook page, Pinterest page, and Twitter account for my business. I will likely only use the Twitter Account and Facebook page to show latest products and such relating to business. I want to use my blog and Pinterest to show a little more and other miscellaneous projects I'm doing. Again, Thank you :) for reading this far.
